Lycos Anti-Spam Screensaver put on halt
Posted :: Dec 6, 2004 by Impact

Many of you have already heard of Lycos' new way of fighting spammers. For those of you unaware, Lycos developed and started distributing a DDOS (Dedicated Denial of Service) screen saver. If you ran the screen saver, it would continuously request information from websites known to be spam-havens. By having many people doing this at one time, the spam sites would be slowed down, and eventually Lycos hoped that the bandwidth costs associated with their screensaver would put the spammers out of business. Unfortunatly, due to widespread criticism, they decided to stop distribution of the screen saver. Any thoughts?
