Google to Challenge PayPal
Posted :: Jun 20, 2005 by Haggs

It seems that Google is like a steam engine that continues to chug along and bring new levels of service never seen before on the Internet. Google's Gmail system offers free 2GB email storage boxes, larger than any other free email service available, and the Google Maps (beta) offers a service similar to MapQuest, but without page refreshes during map manipulation. Now, according to the New York Times, an anonymous chief executive of an online retailer stated that he was approached by Google to participate in a PayPal type online payment service.

Currently, PayPal is the largest (non-credit card) online payment system, and it is owned and supported by eBay. The PayPal service allows customers to set up accounts to pay for eBay auctions, buy products from supported online retailers, or transfer money to other PayPal customers. However, PayPal charges a fee on transactions for its service. There are rumors that suggest that Google may try to take on PayPal by making its system easier to use, while offering the service at a cheaper rate, while using its widespread, solid reputation to build a customer base.

Taking on the big guys is truly a challenge for any company, but Google has been successful in the past.
