With yesterday's release of nVidia's latest graphics card (GPU), the 7800GTX, a few websites worked long into the night to bring you reviews and benchmarks for this new card. While the 7800GTX comes from a new line of cards, the benchmark results are a bit disappointing. According to Tbreak, the 7800GTX performs 9% faster than the 6800GT in 3dMark01, 28% faster in 3dMark03, and 36% faster in 3dMark05, and 18% faster in Aquamark 3. Tbreak also benched Doom 3, Half-Life 2, and UT2004. Guru3D also managed to get its hands on a 7800GTX and took it for a late night drive. The benchmarks for UT2004, Halo, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein all show a dismal 10% gain or less over the 6800GT.
Currently a 6800GT can be purchased for about $350 while the new 7800GTX carries a $599 price tag. Based on the benchmarks from Tbreak and Guru3D it doesn't look like the performance of the new nVidia 7800GTX is worth the steep price tag. nVidia better have miracle drivers up their sleeve or the new 7000 series GPUs may end up going the way of the FX series. For now nVidia holds the speed crown, but it won't be long before ATI releases the x900 GPUs, and benchmarkers can perform a definitive, quantitative comparison.
