Neo-Mech For Sale on eBay
Posted :: Jul 13, 2005 by Haggs

UPDATE: eBay has removed the mech from its auction listings, but information about the mech can be found at Neogentronyx. Look down at the news from July 3rd for evidence that the mech was indeed listed on eBay dispite the now broken link below.

A Bipedal Exo-Skeletal Semi-Robotic Vehicle, or Neo-Mech, is currently listed on eBay (complete with pictures) for $40,000 with $8,000 shipping. If you've ever played Mech Warrior, watched Gundam Wing, or seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, then this idea should be very familiar. The mech, code named NMX04-1A, was produced in 2004 by Neogentronyx and is the first of its kind. The NMX04-1A prototype is up for sale to help fund next phase of research and development to create new mechs "possibly for Arena Fighting." Other uses for such mechs include firefighting, riot control, and law enforcement.

Below is the description as provided by Neogentronyx:

The NMX04-1A is fully functional and stands freely on its own without need of a hoist. Arms, legs, and torso are all powered. The NMX04-1A Prototype is an ( X ) type chassis Mecha meaning Anthropomorphic/humanoid. It stands at 18ft tall, its over 8.5 ft wide, weighs in at 3000lbs

Specifications:
Chassis Type: X (Anthromorphic\Humanoid)
Approx Dimensions: H 18' x W 8.5'
Weight: 3000 lbs ( 1.5 tons )
Power\Drive: 18hp Briggs and Stratton \ Hydraulic Cylinders

A few Features of the NMX04-1A:

  • 12 volt electrical system
  • Key start ignition
  • Lighting system
  • 3000psi hydraulic system.
  • 40pts of possible movement.
  • Clamp styled hands with optional locks for full on crushing or just gentle
  • clasping as full ram extension.
  • Weight stabilizers.
  • Removable foot plates for increased traction.
  • 2 x Flame Throwers, one on each arm.

This prototype is piloted by one person and simple to operate. All controls are within arms reach. The pilot control area is setup with engine cutoff, left and right arm and hand controls, as well as arm twist, raise, and lower. The leg controllers are mounted into foot pedals, once leg position has been achieved; there are secondary rests to assure that leg position of the NMX04-1A will not shift un-intentionally.

Although it is designed with functional controls for moving the legs, bear in mind that this is only a prototype; though the footprint is designed to give stability for a biped of its size and weight it can not take massive strides. Future models will have this capability.
