| |
Movie: The Fly (1986)
Genre: Sci-Fi
Director: David Cronenberg
This movie is a 1986 remake of "The Fly" (1958), which starred Vincent Price. Overall, I have to say this movie is the best remakes I have ever seen. Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park, Independence Day) plays the role of Seth Brundle, an overly ambitious scientist who has gained the ability of molecular transportation through his latest discovery, the Tele-pod.
He meets an interesting woman named Veronica Quaife, played by Geena Davis (Beetle Juice, Thelma & Louise), and decides to show her his invention. After Seth has already showed Veronica how the Tele-pod works, he finds out that she is actually a magazine reporter. He tries to convince her not to tell her editor about his invention and offers her a chance to privately document the rest of his studies on the molecular transporter, for you see it can only transport inanimate objects. Veronica decides to tell her editor (who is also her possessive ex-boyfriend) about the incident. After the editor decides that the whole story is a joke, Veronica decides to go back to Seth and take him up on his offer.
Veronica and Seth become very close as they work together on the development of the telepod. They try sending a live subject through the transporter at one point, but the transport failed, turning the subject inside out (this scene showed some very good special effects). Through out the film, we see Seth and Veronica's relationship becoming stronger, how their relationship helped develop the Tele-pod, and the characters develop in many ways. Eventually, Seth becomes ambitious in his research as he is closer to finding a way to transport living organisms. Finally he is successful! Veronica tells this the news to her editor without the knowledge that Seth was watching. Jealous of what he had just witnessed, Seth gets drunk and decides he is ready to go through the telepod without Veronica's presence. To him everything was fine, but this was the turning point of the film. A fly had been in the Tele-pod with him causing a molecular fusion of Seth's DNA and the fly's DNA (this differs from the original 1956 film where the man had a fly's head and the fly had a man's head). After this incident, Veronica and Seth come back together and their relationship seems to be fine. Right after the fusion, he was extremely healthy and active. As time goes on, he becomes very on edge. His nerves seem to be shot, and tension between he and Veronica grows. As this tension grows, the movie begins to almost split the two stories because the characters are working separate parts of the story.
Veronica tries to help Seth but he refuses. Then, Seth's body seems to begin to wither. The makeup effects for this part were exceptional. He looked as if he was deteriorating with a cancerous overtone. Then he began to morph into "Brundle Fly". He became a hideous creature as well as his own experiment. He was beginning to have the rational thought of a fly and not a human.
During this whole series of events, Veronica had gone to her ex-boyfriend for help ever since Seth started acting odd. The best thing to do was to stay away from Seth (as he also told her himself). Veronica finds out that she is pregnant with Seth's baby and insists on getting an abortion (after a few gruesome nightmares involving larva).
Seth had somehow followed Veronica to the abortion clinic/doctors office and kidnaps her, taking her back to his apartment. Seth planned to fuse himself into Veronica, thus making the baby, veronica, and him one person.
The entire ending sequence was amazing. I can't word the ending sequence because you just have to see it. The movie leaves you in awe just from the last 10 minutes. Overall this movie was an awesome film. Most of the time, remakes are not as good as the originals, but this defiantly surpasses its predecessor. The movie had great visual effects for 1986 (David Cronenberg doesn't use CGI effects), good acting, strong story, and great directing. Jeff Goldblum put forth a good performance in this movie. His character was a perfect fit for Seth Brundle, there really can't be a replacement for him. The role of Brundle also seems to show through other characters that Goldblum has played (especially his character in Independence Day).
I give The Fly an 8 out of 10 rating.
Compared to other David Cronenberg films that I have seen, I like Videodrome much more (look it up).
DVD Collectors, I suggest the fox 25th anniversary DVD for this movie.
The Absolute Insight staff would like to thank Jon for his review, and we are greatly looking forward to more of his work.

Sorry for the state of this review, I had a lot more to it, but lost the original file when I sent it in. I'm trying to redo this one, but time has been tight. Ye, this is a crappy review . Well, either way, you will see more in the future and hopefully the end of this one. If it's ok to ask for them, please throw some ideas for what my next review should be on (console game or movie). Thanks |
